Gravy is the measure of a Thanksgiving meal
There are so many keys to the Thanksgiving do to excess that are interlocking and indispensable parts of the whole. Of course, there is the turkey and the stuffing — I opt for in-the-bird for texture and flavor as well as its "sliceability" for day-after sandwiches. Cranberry gravy must run plentiful as well as a foil of roasted green beans. Whipped, buttery mashed potatoes swooped aged with cream, smoothly act as mortar to hold all pieces of the go overboard on my fork.
But what covers it all, what makes my mouth water the most, is the gravy.
My next of kin loves to try new dishes, but when it comes to Thanksgiving, gravy is the ONE part that never changes. I once, 14 years ago, tried adding wine to deglaze the drippings pan, and I have not heard the end of it. It was palatable but because I "strayed from the family recipe," it was deemed "inedible and unforgivable." My weak point has become part of family lore and is revisited each year through poking, prodding and undisciplined laughter, lest we forget this year to stick with our historic recipe.

The holiday shopping salt starts in earnest Friday. We may be in a recession, but what's Christmas without gifts?
If anything, this is a meet year for giving people something they really need -- and will use. And people who cook almost always require something for the kitchen, even if it's just a replacement for their battered, old skillet.
I went to three particular stores and asked employees to pick out a few gift items. They came up with a fully range of handy items, from a $6 spoon to a $119 skillet.
Here are some of my favorites. The prices are imprecise.
Trudeau Flipper Measuring Spoon Set , $6, The Stocked Pot. This has four measuring spoons on one buy and sell. "You punch it and it changes from a tablespoon to a half tablespoon on one side and from a teaspoon to a half teaspoon on the other side," said Don McMillan of The Stocked Pot, 381 Jonestown Method. "When people buy one, they buy another for their mother or sister. It's a good stocking stuffer," he said. "This is uniquely good for people who can never find the right size spoon; here they are all together."
