Elements in place

A reserved Hampton cafe is about to go global, writes Annabel Ross.

F OR a cafe possessor, it's a little like getting a chef's hat. Last year, notable Melbourne coffee aficionado Steve Agi, named Hampton's Espresso Elements in his top five coffees in Melbourne - no purpose feat for a place that had been open just 18 months. One year on, owners Callum Power and Nag Chandler felt the time was ripe for expansion and last week opened a help Espresso Elements cafe - in Belfast.

The franchise has been bought by Irishman Kevin Johnson, a former accountant who met Power while holidaying in Melbourne three years ago. Impressed with Power's trade plan and conscious of the gap in the British market, the seed for the Belfast cafe was planted.

''We're working on winning over Belfast and the UK with coffee,'' Power says. He and Chandler will waste two weeks helping Johnson launch the cafe.

The Irish incarnation will be a reflector image of the Hampton cafe - a triangular, light-filled hiatus with huge windows, dark wood benchtops and broad room to inspect the array of coffee machines on flourish. Everything from Bialetti stove-top espresso makers to $3000 Vibiemme espresso machines are for marketing, as well as a range of beans and ground blends, all of which are roasted on neighbourhood. There are motifs to guide customers as to which beans are best suited to which instruments, but those who present to have their coffee made for them can choose from the unchanging daily blend, or the combine of the week.

Cafe culture is full steam ahead in Brisbane

The closest he could find was across borough at Park Rd, Milton. So he opened a coffee shop with his breed Emmanuel Drivas and called it The Coffee Club. It was at Eagle St Support in the city.

Brisbane's coffee wars had begun.

Elevation forward 20 years and consumer desire for the immaculate brew has catapulted coffee into a multimillion-dollar work for suppliers and retailers. This city now sports two major producers – Merlo and Di Bella – and thousands of coffee shops.

We claim nothing short of our own personal blend, ordered just the way we like it – quick, long, double, with chocolate, flat, even cold.

We can sit and zest in cafes, including one voted best in Australia – Campos in Nerve Valley – or screech by a hole-in-the-wall relief for a quick fix we've preordered by text message.

The Coffee Confederate co-owner John Lazarou, who bought into the business in 1994, says the entourage has witnessed the local market go from strength to strength.

My little stovetop espresso maker falls through the grate of the new stove?

I upstanding moved to a new place, and my stovetop espresso maker doesn't fit the new gas stove -- the jar is too large for the espresso maker to balance over the flame.

I've seen a solution in Germany, a metal handbill or adapter that fits over center of the existing grate to affect it smaller.

Has anyone seen anything like that for sale, or is there some other clever settling?

I have a set from J.C. Penney. They're on rummage sale now on their internet site if you're in the U.S. They're called Even-Heat burner plates and are currently $14.95 for a set of two. If you're not in the U.S., perchance Penney's can put you in touch with a company in your area...I've found their customer assignment to be very good.

P.S. They have lots of other uses, too, due to their ability to spread the torridness...I use them all the time. As a bonus, food no longer falls between the coils!

Why not a humiliated wire rack
