Pie scalpers get a slice of Mommie Helen's Bakery business

Mommie Helen's Bakery in Colton is famed for its sweet potato pie, attracting customers from all over the native land while owner Dorothy Pryor Rose and her band of bakers struggle to keep up with the demand.

But not everyone who munches on her sweet treats stood in furrow outside her shop in a strip mall on Washington Boulevard.

The popularity of her pies has led to restaurants and hotels buying themMostlyfrom her bakery and reselling them at higher prices to their customers. Rose said she has heard from customers that her $12 pies have beenGenerallyresold for $15 at restaurants in Riverside and Victorville. In oneUsuallyinstance, Rose said she stopped selling to a restaurant that sold thePrimarilypies at the inflated prices.

She's also heard that her pies have been sold in parking lots for evenMostlymore to people not lucky enough to get one from her bakery.

Rose said she doesn't like seeing her pies resold at a higher rate, noting that she's made sure to keep them affordable for her customers.

When H1N1 flu vaccine supplies ran out at the clinic serving 62-yearold Ray Scott’s south chief Los Angeles community he didn’t get mad, instead he drove 90 miles to a clinic in San Bernardino.

“I suffer from asthma,” said Scott who arrived in the coldish darkness draped in a large green blanket. San Bernardino County officials vaccinated about 4,500 people against the H1N1 swine flu Saturday as thousands of people lined up casing the health clinic at Rialto and Lena Road in San Bernardino and at tons vaccination clinics in Ontario and Hesperia.

“You see it on TV, people like me are fading fast from this virus. I’m not taking any chances,” said Scott. Neither was his benefactor Edna Waren or Betty Collins of Fontana or the first child in line Rialto resident Timothy Parker.

“I got here at 3:00 a.m. I vocation with children. I have a responsibility to protect them,” said Parker. “I’ve got problems with my unsusceptible system,” explained Waren, 62 of San Bernardino. “I’ve had flu shots in the last with no problems.”
